Narrow, but fun

This is my first set of knobby tires for my road bike, so I can only compare them to road tires, although I have ridden my bike with road tires of the same width on some of the same dirt trails I've tested the Clement tires on. These tires provide much more grip and confidence on dirt trails than my slicks. It's noticeable especially on steep uphills where my rear tire would struggle to grip the trail with slick tires, and on downhills, where I don't feel safe carrying much speed at all on slicks, but with the knobbies I feel much more in control. On flat (dirt) ground, these tires have no advantage over a decent pair of road tires of the same width. I would prefer wider tires than these for dirt riding, but 32mm is as wide as my current bike can accept. I feel like these tires would give better grip at lower pressures, but since my bike and I weigh about 230 pounds together, I need to run them at max PSI to avoid pinch flats on rough terrain. On pavement, when accelerating, braking, and especially when turning, the Clement tires feel quite squirmy and not at all confidence-inspiring when compared to road tires. They also roll more slowly than my Gatorskins and especially my Compass tires on pavement. But that's all to be expected from knobby tires. As cyclocross tires go, these are pretty narrow, so they're not ideal, but that's my own fault for having a bike that can't go wider than 32mm. I'm glad these tires are available so I can get some CX action.
