Nice Base Layer
Nice item recommend it, shipping was fast and smooth very happy with purchase.
Layer up..
At 5'10", 12 3/4 stone, I don't generally wear much more than a Lge in most things.. so going by the sizing charts, I was slightly apprehensive ordering the XL.. I shouldn't have been! This 'Flanders' Short Sleeve Base Layer could well have been stitched by the finest Italian suit tailors of Milan! Every contact point evenly comfortable, with no pulling or bunching - yet it's sufficiently fitted to create that snug, draft free extra layer much sort after at this time of the year.. it's plenty long enough, too - giving ample lower back coverage without the usual up rising of some other layers! This base is so effective, I can see no need for any additional layers until the thermostats really tumble! My only Con..? The neck could be a fraction taller - but then that's what the Castelli head/neck thingy's for, I guess!
Quirky but effective
To be perfectly honest the Flanders wasn't quite what I'd expected. Unlike many baselayers the fabric has very little stretch so I would imagine that its close cut fit is quite unforgiving. I'm a slim 6'2" and did the usual 'Castelli-size-up' to a Large. The fit is pretty close (especially under the arms) but then it ought to be. I was surprised that it's quite a short cut (particularly at the front) but in conjunction with bib-shorts/tights it makes sense (still, an extra centimetre or two wouldn't hurt!). While thin, the material has an ever so slightly fuzzy appearance, and presumably it is this which aids both its insulative and 'wicking' abilities. There's a generous amount of very open mesh material under and behind the armpits, just where you need it, though I must confess an interest in how this holds up to repeated washings. In use it's been very effective under a winter jersey on single digit (Celsius) days. I'm confident that it would layer well too. While I wouldn't necessarily single the Flanders out as my favourite bit of Castelli kit, it has performed admirably, nevertheless.
