The Gold Standard … but

2

I’ve had Scicon cases for the longest time and they are very good and sturdy. Nevertheless, the wheel recess in the new version is substantially smaller than the old versions and it does not fit all wheels with tires at 20psi! I have Zipp Firecrest 303’s with 28mm tires and they don’t fit at all. Their website mentions it fits 28mm’s but it doesn’t. I raised this with Scicon and they say “there is no difference in the dimensions” … but there clearly is a difference of more than 1cm. I really hope they adjust their design because this always was the best bike-case in the market.

Great case at a great price

I really wanted this case to protect my new Pinarello when taking it on the plane. I had a soft-sided case (Bikind) with inflatable side panels but ended with damage to my bike when one of the panels deflated during transit. This case was much easier to pack and required much less dis-mantling of my bike. So packing and unpacking were much faster. I felt more confident that my bike would be undamaged and that the TSA would be able to carry out their inspection without re-arranging things poorly. My first shipment went very well. I have several more upcoming trips and I look forward to using the case for those.

Excellent Case

First, as always, ProBikeKit delivered the huge box in a very reasonable amount of time to Alaska. Honestly, I sometimes get packages from PBK faster than from domestic Amazon. Regarding the case, it works well. To pack the bike, remove the wheels, deflate tires, and put the wheels in the moulded wheel wells with the included skewers. Then, remove the pedals, loosen the stem and bars and strap the bike in. Remember your torque wrench for reassembling the bars. The whole package, with my Trek Speed Concept, Enve wheels and some tools was about #50. The case's caster wheels work great, and it was very easy to cart around the airport. Remember that TSA will open the box, so don't have a lot of loose objects. Despite the airlines' valiant attempts to harm my bike, based on the nicks and scratches on the case, the bike was fine.

Well designed travel case

5

I have several upcoming bicycle vacations and wanted a first class case to ship my bike ahead of time to the various locations. I researched them for several weeks and decided that this case was the best designed and simplest to use. I have not been disappointed. Although the case is heavy, it slides easily as there are wheels front and back. Packing the bike was very quick and easy: you remove the seat post and saddle, pedals and wheels and loosen the front stem to turn the handlebars to the side. The wheels slide into protective sleeves and you attach them directly to the case very tight and secure. The bike fits perfectly inside the case and the seat post and saddle and pedals go into the pouch provided. I did use bubble wrap to protect the rear derailleur and more bubble wrap to protect the frame and make it fit more tightly inside. All in all a very simple and quick operation.

Good but not great.

I have used this box 3 times now for 2 European trips and a transatlantic flight. Each time the bike has emerged unscathed The box has only suffered some scuffing and one bent locking mechanism but is still functional. The bike is relatively easy to pack away and set up. The box is lightweight so you can store some cycle stuff in it without weight penalty if your bike is light enough. My only criticism is poor finishing quality. The press studs on some of the internal padding do not attach, the washer eyelets protecting the box lid when the wheels are attached came off almost immediately.. In addition some of the advertised strapping was not included So I had to improvise. Just make sure you order it in time to check It properly before you need it.

Disappointing

2

After owning a Scicon Bike Box for 11 years with total satisfaction I bought a new one for my latest trips as the old case was cracked at the wheels (having been repaired once already) and the wheels needed replacement again as well. The case is still robust and now in black rather than grey of the old one. The wheel mouldings are still too tight unless the tyres are fully deflated (I have 700 x 23 on my S Works Tarmac). Whilst a solid box still it remains very heavy if you are flying. Unbelievably it is now only fitted with 2 straps at the top to hold the frame secure. The old one had a strap at the bottom as well and the 3 straps held the frame beautifully. It now means there is nothing to stop the frame moving inside the box. Luggage handlers will place the box any which way up!. Scicon seem to try and compensate for this by supplying some padded wheel covers with elastic straps to stop the frame hitting the wheels. Since the wheels are tight in the enclosures you cannot fit the covers until the wheels are in place which means you cannot access the quick releases without putting your hand inside the covers - a Mickey Mouse arrangement! This all needs correcting after which it will be a great box again. Disappointing. Have they ever used the new box?

Fantastic Travel Case

I recently purchased my second SCICON case. The first one got nearly a decade of use before it was destroyed by TSA - but the bike was still completely unharmed. These cases are light, strong, and very easy to maneuver even when you're dragging additional luggage into the airport. This kit has been with me on many trips and I could not recommend it more highly.
