I live in Toronto, CA and I was tired of cold toes after 30mins of riding, and numb toes after 50mins. I've tried all sorts of overshoes, thermal versions, toe warmers, layered over my cycling shoes, wearing plastic bags, taping all the vents and nothing seemed to work. I decided that after years of exhausting my options of using my regular cycling shoes I would buy a set of winter cycling boots. I am a N.Amer size 8.5. In a Specialized cycling road shoe, I wear a 42. In Shimano mtb shoe, I wear a 42. In a Northwave, I wear a 41. And it fits like a glove. I have never owned a Northwave shoe before so i am glad they fit and fit well. The length is perfect, the width is perfect, my feet aren't swimming in them, my foot feels like it's in a warm sock. No excess space anywhere. On the Northwave size guide a size 8.5 shoe would be a 41. And for my feet, that's correct. These shoes do feel a heavier than my road shoes, but that's to be expected for a winter boot. I did buy the mtb version of this Arctic, mostly because there's snow and I'd rather have the extra traction of the lugs vs the smooth sole of the road. Plus I mtb so given the choice of only 1 winter boot, i went with a mtb version. The lacing system is similar to what you'd find on a XC ski boot. It has a deep heelcup. It feels very solid. Temperatures here in Toronto can be anywhere from 5deg C to -30deg C. I don't normally ride in temps below -10 deg C. but I expect to use these anywhere between -5 and 5 deg C.
