Durolite Outer Skin
Strength to weight ratio's have always played an important part in Bont cycling shoe design as all materials considered and developed for products within the Bont range must comply to strict standards. Durolite has been developed and chosen for the Vaypor S upper for its extremely durable nature and light weight.
Unidirectional Carbon And Micro Grid
The Vaypor S is manufactured utilizing unidirectional carbon fibre laid specific to stress points to maximise performance whilst minimising weight, creating the highest strength to weight ratio of any cycling shoe currently available. The base is finished with a matt treatment to improve the aesthetics of the sole.
Bont Cycling’s Micro Grid allows for greater accuracy in cleat placement and adjustment.
One of the key features of the Vaypor S is it’s new upper design and integrated retention system. Whilst designing the Vaypor S, it was imperative that the shoe would cater to the extremely demanding needs of professional sprinters. Pro sprinters require not only an extremely comfortable shoe with lossless power transfer, but also a highly adjustable retention system that is able to lock them into the heel cup of a shoe without any heel movement.
Toe And Heel Protection
A new one piece toe guard has been designed to further reduce weight, increase airflow into shoe and improve the aesthetics of the front area. The heel guard has also been designed to improve grip.
Ventilation of the Vaypor S is maximized by including ventilation holes across the tongue, top of the forefoot, through the front bumper and arch area of the shoe. The ventilation system of the Vaypor S has been designed to create an even airflow around the foot for cooling.
Between the outer leather and the liner we add a material that is proprietary to Bont to stop the cycling shoe from stretching over time. This material has similar strength characteristics to Kevlar. The material is stitched to the outer leather and bonded to the liner so it can never move or be removed, it becomes part of the cycling shoes structure. This layer assits in pedalling efficiency by maintaining a supportive structure over the top of the foot in the upward part of the pedal stroke.
A last is a replica of a foot that the cycling shoe is built around. Last makers do not make cycling shoe lasts, they only make shoe lasts so perfecting a cycling shoe last requires a great deal of expertise in functional biomechanics and ongoing research. At Bont, we have been perfecting our performance footwear lasts since 1975 and the process is ongoing. Bont carbon fiber is sourced exclusively from the world's #1 carbon manufacturer, Toray of Japan. The base of the Vaypor S is made by hand utilizing uni-directional carbon fiber which is embedded with epoxy thermo setting resin. The fibers are hand laid in the matrix according to the strain they will have to bear. The Vaypor S utilizes unidirectional carbon fiber allowing Bont to create a performance cycling shoe with very specific strength characteristics based on stress points in cycling. As unidirectional carbon absorbs less resin then cross weave fibers, it also assists in the weight reduction of the cycling shoes.
The Vaypor S utilises closed cell memory foam that will not retain water assisting in maintaining a lighter shoe during wet conditions as well as ensuring sweat which can begin to break down the durability of the shoe is not absorbed.
Medial Longitudinal Arch Support
Structural medial longitudinal arch support is provided in all models to stop over pronation of feet.
Over pronation is one of the main contributors to incorrect tracking of knees during a cyclists pedaling phase due to internal rotation of tibia and femur. This can result in knee injuries.
In addition, the rotation of tibia/femur can cause the pelvis to tilt resulting in lower back strain.
Anatomical Forefoot Shape
Conventional cycling shoes offer a “dress shoe” type shaping. Although highly aesthetic this will cause the toes along with the metatarsals to be overly constricted, compressing the nerves between the metatarsals which often results in the common ""hot foot"" sensation.
Bont cycling shoes anatomical shaping allows the foot to function in its most efficient and anatomically correct position. The foot is supported in its endeavour to relax through the metatarsal joints allowing the pedalling force to be spread across the greatest possible surface area.
Anatomical Heel Cup
The anatomical heel cup shaping of Bont cycling shoes provides increased stability during the pull through stage of pedaling stroke and up stroke. This stabilization is achieved without any mechanical operation or over tightening of straps/laces allowing for increased comfort and blood circulation.
Lateral Forefoot Support
Bont’s lateral forefoot support ensures neutral positioning of the forefoot and alleviates common issues associated with over pronation and supination. These issues often result in incorrect tracking of knees causing injuries along with hip and lower back pain.

Excellent Power transfer
I was intrigued by the design of these shoes and love the instructional videos that warned me that I might have to take a few times to adjust the shoes through reheating. I think I've been too cautious in the oven with the heating process and of course that's a good thing. But they are spectacular shoes.
Heat molding really helps it fit well, but it only works at the bottom of the shoes. Some tightness around the ankle opening isn't able to be molded so it can cause blisters if I spend too much time riding the mountain bikes shoes. Two issues with the super stiff tub, its shape traps water when it's raining, so you're pedaling in a small pool of water. It's also possibly too stiff, as spending a lot of time descending on rough chip seal roads can lead to too much road buzz transferring into your feet.
This is my second pair of Bont shoes and I only wish I had switched earlier in my cycling journey. These shoes look a little different but different is good. Nothing feels or rides like molded shoes in my opinion.
Finally an anatomically designed shoe
As someone with flat feet and a somewhat wider forefoot, I've always struggled finding shoes that fit my feet amongst all the euro shaped footwear. Admittedly, I've had to heat mold these far more times than expected, however they're now at a point where they are the shape of my foot, no numbness, and have retained incredible stiffness. Double check the size wizard on Bont's website and measure a few times, this worked for me. I normally wear a 45-45.5 and ended up in a 46 due to the size chart and am happy with this.
Bont Vapor S
I recently bought these shoes and became a bit disappointed with the way they fit after my first ride with them. On the outer side, there's an attachment for the BOA system which digs into the side of your foot, very uncomfortable. I'll try and give some time to see if it's a matter of getting used to them, will update the review in the future.
Ready for Prime Time
Review after 450 miles / 25 hours in the shoe: Quality is first-rate. The very thin footbed insoles could be better. I replaced them with Superfeet green high profile / high volume insoles, which work well since I ordered a Euro size larger than I normally wear. I like Specialized Body Geometry insoles best, but they don't have the SilvaDure anti-bacterial treatment of the Shimano S-Phyres. Bont Vapor S carbon sole is miles better than my three other road shoes, Sidi, Specialized S-Works, and Shimano S-Phyre. Bont's sole wraps up around the outside of my foot. Then the upper is glued over the outside of the sole. The result is that the shoe feels absolutely solid, with the foot and shoe seeming as one force on the pedal. They absolutely have the best power transfer of all my road shoes. They don't have as much ventilation at my S-Works or S-Phyres. I'll see how they do when summer rolls back around. I think Bont could have put more ventilation holes in the uppers.
Shoes are very stiff with great power transfer. Double BOA allow for precision adjustment with plenty of room in the toebox. I went to the Bont website and used the size wizard, ordered the recommended size, and they fit perfectly. Very happy with them.
Fundamental design fault, in that the top boa pulls from the anchor below the ankle bone towards the big toe. The tension is not applied over the top of the foot as you would expect. This may be less of an issue with "high" feet, but while two insoles helps a bit, they make everything else too tight. In effect, the top boa duplicates much of the tension of the bottom boa. My feet are 255mm (93/96mm wide) and I have a size 42. I suspect a 41 would be too tight in the toe. The heat moulding works for the heal cup, but don't expect much adjustment elsewhere. The carbon surrounding your foot is very unforgiving, so the fit has to give enough space. I use them for short rides, done up tight. Not so good for long rides where comfort is more important. They look good though. Style over function.
Bont Vaypor S
I ended up ordering 2 pair of 1/2 size different. I ended up with the half size smaller. The Bont's are awesome. Great fit with the heat molding. It did take a couple of tries in the oven to get the fit right but they are like a glove now. Super stiff but comfortable. I highly recommended them.
