Reducing friction. Friction in a derailleur system can mean the difference between a well-functioning shifter and one that continues to miss-shift. Jagwire maintains very specific standards for friction and tests hundreds of inner wires every week to ensure these high standards are met and maintained.

I like to keep a few jagwire's handy as its a nuisance if one breaks and I haven't got one to replace.
It's an inner gear cable, does the job
So long as you make sure you're buying the right cable for your housing, this one will do just fine. Very long for any setup on a typical bike and even some positions on a tandem (maybe not rear derailleur if shifters are at front). Newer Shimano may have slightly larger gear cables, so like I said, make sure this is the right width cable for the application and you're good to go.
It does what it's supposed to do. Very reliable.
